Hi! I'm a Junior student in Applied Engineering trying to figure out if I want to go into Electronics or Design/ Automation Manufacturing. Some background info, my current major is Electronics.. I've got my core classes done and I'm into my professional development classes. I'm doing a math minor, so I can go into Physics later on in life. I have a good scholarship I can't pass up for either of these two majors, but I'm really not sure which would be the best to choose.

Manufacturing engineers are retiring faster than graduates are produced, resulting in outstanding employment opportunities. In addition, industrial productivity and technological innovations are driving the demand for well-prepared manufacturing engineers.

This position serves as the link between Sagetech Corporation’s Engineering Department and Sagetech Industries Production and ensures that any quality and engineering issues are addressed.

Creates and maintains production work instructions according to product specifications
Work with customers on quality and design changes of products

I've already had digital electronics, and I did good in it and enjoyed it. The class was extremely theory based (Logic design, Counters, & Registers) and we only did three labs the whole semester. However, I'm not looking forward to taking Advanced Electronics, which deals with A/D conversion, state logic, and computer analysis of logic families. There's not many labs in it either, and whereas I enjoy theory, I don't care as much about learning how a microprocessor works as much as I would like to build something that works with a microprocessor. Also, I know several people with a degree in electronics that are in the IT/ Computer Support field.. I care nothing for repairing computers nor troubleshooting them. I would also have to take two classes in solid state devices, and a class in digital communications.

Now, for manufacturing, I grew up on a farm and I picked up blacksmithing and metalworking when I was a young child. Now, I know manufacturing deals with more than just metalworking, but I enjoy designing and building things.. I'm really a hands-on learner, and a very active person. The classes I'd need to take here are strength of materials, materials processing, CIM management and networking, and CAM. However, I don't want to just be limited in my career choice in the case that the economy crashes or manufacturing jobs outsource to different countries, so that's why I'm a bit worried about choosing manufacturing.
